Synopsis: Buffy prepares for her toughest battle yet. She will be facing a foe that even scares vampires away. She will be facing Cordelia in a struggle to be Homecoming Queen. Mr. Trick has a trick up his sleeve which he calls Slayerfest '98.
Review: I am a sucker for cheesiness. As soon as Mr. Trick uttered the phrase "Slayerfest '98," I was hooked for the rest of the episode. A whole host of monsters are in town for the fest including a spiny-headed demon, a newlywed vampire from a previous episode, twin German commandos, and a hunter.
Buffy's real challenge in this episode is not the monsters in town for the Slayerfest--it is going against Cordelia for Homecoming Queen. Cordelia gets a comical moment where she scares off a vampire.
Some episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer can bring tears to your eyes, and some episodes keep you laughing the entire episode. "Homecoming" falls into the latter category. This season so far has tackled some serious issues, and it was time for a good laugh, and "Homecoming" provides a great laugh earning it an 8 out of 10. The Mayor makes his first appearance in this episode, and, disappointingly, he is not very creepy--yet.
Objectionable Content: Xander and Willow are trying on outfits for the prom alone together in a bedroom. It seems a little strange that they would not have parental supervision, but they are lifelong friends. Willow modestly changes behind a folding screen. This scene does culminate in a fairly steamy kiss between the two.
